Gas Emissions From the Western Aleutians Volcanic Arc

چکیده
The Aleutian Arc is remote and highly active volcanically. Its 4,000 km extent from mainland Alaska to Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula hosts over 140 volcanic centers of which about 50 have erupted in historic times. We present data gas samples emission measurements obtained during an expedition the western-most segment arc September 2015 order extend sparse knowledge on volatile emissions this but volcanically region. Some volcanoes investigated here not been sampled for gases before writing. Our show that all host high-temperature magmatic-hydrothermal systems discharges typical oceanic arcs. Based helium isotopes, western has minimal contributions overriding crust. Volcanic CO 2 fluxes are small, compared Peninsula Alaska. comparatively low may be related lower sediment flux delivered trench part arc.

A reassessment of current volcanic emissions from the Central American arc with specific examples from Nicaragua
The Central American volcanic arc supplies a significant proportion of the persistent annual global sulphur dioxide emissions from volcanoes. In November/December 2003, we completed a survey of the arc section from Mombacho to San Cristóbal in Nicaragua recording individual mean fluxes of 800, 530 and 220 Mg day 1 in the plumes from San Cristóbal, Telica and Masaya, respectively. An assessment ...
متن کاملThe Slab Portal Beneath the Western Aleutians
Tomographic images of the distribution of shear wave speed beneath the northwestern Pacific delineate the configuration of the subducted oceanic lithosphere beneath the western Aleutian Arc. At ~100 km depth, a fast shear wave speed anomaly lies beneath the Aleutian Arc everywhere east of 173E. Between 164E and 173E, however, seismic velocities at this depth are slow relative to the surrounding...
متن کاملDo volcanic emissions affect carbon gas fluxes in peatlands?
Recently, a link has been suggested between volcanic deposition of SO4 and the suppression of CH4 emissions in northern peatlands (Gauci et al., 2008). This link stems from the widely accepted idea that acid rain SO4 additions to peatlands can cause a shift in microbial communities as SO4 reducing bacteria out-compete methanogens for substrates, which results in a suppression of CH4 emission. H...
